The Golden Shedding Guide: How to Live With a Golden (Without a Golden Carpet)

If you own a golden, you own a lint roller. Probably five. "Why is my golden shedding like crazy?" is one of the most-searched golden questions, and the honest answer is: because that's what a double coat does. But you can control where the hair ends up.

How the golden coat works

Goldens have a double coat: - Undercoat: soft, dense and fluffy. Keeps them warm and dry. - Outer coat (guard hairs): longer and water-resistant. Protects the skin from sun, water and dirt.

They shed some hair every day, all year. Then, usually in spring and fall, they "blow" the undercoat: the old fluff comes out in clumps over a few weeks. That's when it looks like it's snowing golden.

The tools I actually use

You don't need ten brushes. Three do the job: 1. Slicker brush: fine bent wires. Smooths the outer coat and catches loose hair. 2. Undercoat rake: long teeth that reach through the outer coat and pull out loose undercoat. This is the one that makes the biggest difference. 3. Metal comb: for the feathers on legs, ears, chest and tail, and for finding mats.

Use the rake gently. You want loose undercoat, not to cut or pull healthy hair.

The everyday routine (10 minutes, 3 to 4 times a week)

  1. Rake the undercoat in the direction the hair grows, section by section: neck, back, sides, rear.
  2. Slicker brush over the whole body.
  3. Comb out the feathers and behind the ears (where mats love to form).

Blowout-week plan

When you see clumps coming out:

Don't shave your golden

It's tempting in summer, but: - Shaving doesn't stop shedding. The hair just comes out shorter. - The double coat may grow back patchy or uneven. - The outer coat actually protects against sunburn and helps them handle heat.

A good undercoat rake-out does more for summer comfort than shaving.

Shedding starts inside

A shiny, healthy coat depends on nutrition. Omega-3 fatty acids from fish or salmon oil support healthy skin and coat, and protein and vitamins like A and E matter too.

If you started the daily multivitamin from my first email, you're already covered: HolistaPet Multivitamin Soft Chews include salmon oil and flax oil along with vitamins A and E.

When shedding isn't normal

See your vet if you notice: - Bald patches or thin areas - Red, flaky, smelly or greasy skin - Constant scratching or licking - Shedding along with weight gain, low energy or a dull, brittle coat (sometimes a thyroid issue)
