The Golden Calm Guide: Panting, Storms, Fireworks and the Velcro Golden

Goldens are famously people-dogs. That's the best thing about them, and sometimes the hardest. Following you into the bathroom, pacing when you pick up your keys, and trembling through every thunderstorm are all common golden stories.

Is the panting normal?

Normal panting: after exercise, on warm days, when excited. It settles within a few minutes of rest in a cool place.

Stress panting: panting with pacing, drooling, trembling, yawning, lip licking, hiding or clinging, often with a trigger like storms, fireworks or you leaving.

Worth a vet visit: heavy panting at rest on a cool day with no obvious reason. That can be a sign of pain, fever or illness, especially in seniors.

The velcro golden: practicing being alone

Goldens were bred to work side by side with people, so many find being alone hard. Here's a step-by-step plan.

Week 1: Boring goodbyes - Pick up your keys, put on your shoes, then sit back down. Repeat randomly through the day until it means nothing. - Leave for 30 seconds to 1 minute. Come back calmly with no big greeting.

Week 2: Build time - Slowly stretch to 5, 10, then 20 minutes. - Give a frozen stuffed toy or long-lasting chew as you leave, and pick it up when you return.

Week 3 and beyond - Keep building in small steps. If your golden panics (howling, destroying, drooling, escaping), go back to the last easy step.

Tips that help - Tire the brain before leaving: a sniff walk or a puzzle feeder beats another round of fetch. - Use a camera to see what really happens while you're gone. - Severe separation distress deserves help from your vet or a certified behaviorist.

Storm and fireworks checklist

Ahead of time - ☐ Make a den: a covered crate or quiet interior room with their bed - ☐ Play storm or firework sounds very quietly during meals, slowly louder over weeks - ☐ Check ID tags and microchip details (scared dogs bolt through doors and fences)

On the night - ☐ Long walk early, before dark or before the storm - ☐ Windows and curtains closed, fan, white noise or TV on - ☐ Long-lasting chew or frozen stuffed toy in the den - ☐ Stay home if you can, and calmly comfort them if they come to you (comforting doesn't "reward" fear) - ☐ Leash on for every potty break, even in a fenced yard

Calming support for the big days

On storm nights, fireworks and long trips, I also use HolistaPet CBD Calming Chews. They combine broad-spectrum hemp CBD (no THC, so no "high") with organic chamomile, L-tryptophan and choline to help maintain calm.

Some dogs get a little sleepy. If your golden takes any medication, check with your vet before starting.
